Voices of the Maya 2
23rd January 2023
This January I returned to Belize and to the same community that helped create 'A Treasury of Mayan Tales' and A Q'eqchi' Maya Dictionary as part of the Voices of the Maya project.
Accompanied by two team mates, we delivered the books to all the Maya who were involved in the project and left several copies for the schools involved.
The books were extremely well received and both the Q'eqchi' and Mopan Maya were delighted to see their own languages written into an accessible resource.

On the 10th of June, I was awarded the British Dyslexia Association ‘Cadogan Award for Resilience 2022' and shortlisted in the top three for their entrepreneur award.
This is a huge honour and represents a lifetime of resilience. I hope to use this recognition to inspire others with Dyslexia and aim to positively change negative attitudes towards a gift which should be celebrated.

SheTravel Global is a women only network for modern travel, allowing its members to share information to aid safe travel wherever your destination may be.
Earlier this month they interviewed me about my experiences being a woman on expedition.
Voices of the Maya Expedition
February 2020
The Voices of the Maya Expedition was completed in Feburary 2020. The expedition’s aim was to create educational resources in Mopan and Qetchi Maya as well as deliver oral hygiene workshops to the community.
We worked closely with the school, especially with the older years, who all wrote stories about life in the community. The top five of these were translated into Qetchi and Mopan Maya.
The illustration and art workshops were a huge success and seeing the joy on the children's faces whilst painting in school, shall stay with me for life!
We conducted dental hygiene workshops with the school children, women and young children of the village. Bio-degradable wooden toothbrushes and toothpaste were given to all those who attended the workshops and were very much appreciated, especially by the elderly of the village, who were often forgotten.

Later this year,myself and my new wonderful team mate, will be returning to the jungles of Central America to work, live and film with a community of Maya to work with the community and discover more about their lives, heritage and archaeology. Leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.

Next year I will be walking part of the Great Wall of China for the Sepsis Trust. An estimated 20 million to 30 million cases of sepsis occur globally each year.
Sepsis arises when the body’s response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs, potentially leading to death or significant morbidity. (World Health Organisation, 2018)
One in ten deaths associated with pregnancy and childbirth is due to maternal sepsis with over 95% of deaths due to maternal sepsis occurring in low- and middle-income countries. One million newborn deaths are associated with maternal infection, such as maternal sepsis, each year. World Health Organisation, 2018).
In the UK approximately 5 people die of sepsis ever hour.

Kenya Quest Expedition Report

Received the report for the Kenya Quest expedition today. The report will be archived at the Royal Geographical Society and includes a section I wrote on filming the expedition. The expedition film will be previewed on the 12th of January 2019 and with the report available from the Scientific Exploration Society after this date.
SARAID

This weekend myself and 21 others successfully passed the selection process to become a SARAID technician. SARAID are a voluntary search and rescue organisation, who offer assistance in natural disasters and relieve human suffering around the world. In January I start my 2 years of training to become an operational member, and contribute to actively saving people's lives around the world.
The selection weekend, was designed to test ones strength of character and personality. We slept little, worked as small and large teams, fought against twisted ankles and rescued many 'casualties'. At times it was difficult, but overall I found it enjoyable. I look forward to a exciting future with the team.

Only the dedicated and determined survive and more often than not, can take several years to get a foot in the door. In May, I helped award an Alumni Audience Award, at the University of Kents, Visual Anthropology department annual screening.
''This award replaced the previous audience prize and acknowledges the importance of our alumni’s engagement and support of our students in making the next step in their journey as visual anthropological filmmakers and researchers.
Charlotte Austwick won the Hugh Brody Runner Up Prize for her film ‘Welcome to the Country’ that was screened in Resolations 2015.''

Kenya Quest Expedition

I have safely returned from the Kenya Quest Expedition and have now just manged to recover from my jet lag. The expedition was a huge success. I was clear that the work we did really made a difference. I contributed to numerous projects, however my personal highlight of which was helping complete a concrete school room, at a school which had over 800 pupils.

This weekend I attended ‘Explore’ 2019 at the Royal Geographic Society.It was an incredible weekend full of expedition advice and was great to meet such fascinating explorers, each with their own unique interests and talents.
I was invited to be part of the film making panel and hopefully inspired more expedition filmmakers to go and make spectacular and worthwhile films.
Myself and my teammate also exhibited with the ‘Voices of the Maya’ expedition and received lots of positive interest.
Another incredible moment on the weekend was Nigel Winser choosing the ‘Beneath the Skin’ Expedition within the top 6 of 46 upcoming expeditions. Watch this space!
